About Us

Phares Bomberger, at the age of 20, bought out the owner of a small trading post, known as the John Gable General Store, located in the village of Elm, Lancaster County, PA. In 1887, the store was renamed Bomberger’s General Store, offering everything from bread and milk, to hammers and nails. Over the years, the family-owned store experienced continued growth. Phares began both an insurance business and a linoleum business in the basement of the building. In 1951, the linoleum area was expanded and moved upstairs. There was also a barber shop, a dry goods area, and a shoe department added to the store, as well as a post office. Phares’s son Henry served as postmaster. In 1953, there was another expansion of the Flooring Department, adding ceramic tile, vinyl tile and carpet. This expansion required the hiring of several installers to keep up with business. Several generations, and 85 years later, in 1972, a new store was built on the property, doubling space and sales. The Lawn and Garden Department was added at this time, and there was a further expansion of the Grocery, Hardware, Dry Goods, Gun, Insurance, and Floor Covering Departments. On November 15, 1994, Bomberger’s celebrated the opening of its brand new store in the picturesque town of Lititz, located approximately 2 miles from its founding location. The opening of this new store was the culmination of the joint efforts of many individuals and companies, including JC Hale Construction. A large unoccupied warehouse was successfully converted into a beautiful asset to the community. This location offers easier accessibility as well as over 64,000 square feet of retail space. Within that vast retail space there are seven different departments offering everything from bird feeders and blue-jeans to soccer balls and lawn equipment. One can buy floor covering, power tools, and paint supplies all in one stop. The Flooring Department covers all of your flooring needs: Ceramic Tile, Hardwood, Laminate, Carpet, Vinyl, and Area Rugs. In the Cabinet Department, we can go from initial concept to complete design and installation for your next kitchen or bath project. Our Lawn and Garden Department offers all the latest in tools and equipment as well as fertilizers and garden supplies. We also provide service for your lawn and garden equipment. The Hardware Department is where you will find all the tools and supplies necessary to complete your next construction or home improvement project. Perhaps you just need a tool for the day or weekend. Stop by the Rental Department where they offer a large selection available to meet your needs. Our Paint Department offers a huge variety of colors in both Ace brand and Pratt and Lambert – including the popular Williamsburg color line. A computerized color-matching service is also offered. Need a gift? You’ll find many beautiful ideas in our Gifts and Housewares Department. Whether you are looking for a new pair of earrings, or a new cappuccino maker, we sell those items and many more. Bomberger’s remains a family owned and operated store. Currently managing the store are Henry Jr. and Roy Jr., fourth-generation Bombergers. Several of Henry Jr.’s children, the fifth generation, are also working here, including Richard & Jenny Bomberger, Bob & Dori Resch, and Todd Bomberger. Just recently the 6th generation has started working at the store in various departments. Henry Jr. considers Bomberger’s to be a modern country store; an old business offering all the items modern-day shoppers want. He believes many new stores are designed for a faster paced lifestyle; however, Bomberger’s aims for a more relaxed pace. We want you to take your time, look around, and enjoy your visit. We value hard work and customer satisfaction, and are dedicated to the things that last.
